Design Sponge | Cupcake Liners Lamp
Instead of paying an arm and a leg for an awesome hanging paper lantern, you can create your own, making your own personal twists, for much cheaper. All you need is some cupcake liners, petit four liners, a paper lantern, a Hemma cord (you can purchase one from IKEA for less than $4), and a hot glue gun.
After finding your paper lantern, balance the lantern on a bowl (this will keep the liners from getting crushed as you work your way around the lantern), and begin attaching your cupcake liners along the lantern with the hot glue. When you’re halfway finished, turn the lantern upside down on the bowl and finish the rest.
Next, use the hot glue gun to attach the petit fours liners in the centers of each cupcake liner. After the lamp has dried, attach the cord and hang your light.
Design Sponge | Wallpaper Tray Tables
If you have an old set of metal tray tables, or happen to stumble upon a set at a garage sale, here’s a quick way to spruce them up. Purchase spray paint to make sure the entire tables are smooth looking and match. After the tables have dried, measure the top of the tables and cut out wallpaper, wrapping paper, or scrapbook paper to size. Adhere the paper to the tops of your tray tables, using a metal ruler to smooth out any creases or bubbles. Add a layer of contact paper on the top of the paper to make the surface easy to clean, again using the ruler to smooth out the creases and bubbles.
Design Sponge | Twig Push Pins
These twig push pins and wall hooks are actually pretty simple to make. And even easier to look at!
What you need for this DIY craft: twigs, a hand saw, hammer, small t-pins for the push pin craft, small finishing nails for the wall hooks craft, hammer, superglue, needle nose pliers with a cutting end, and safety goggles of course.
What you do: First of all, you need to cut your twigs into little nubs. For the push pin craft you’ll need half-inch nubs, for the wall hooks craft you’ll need 2-inch long nubs. Now, using your pliers, snip off the tops of your t-pins or your finishing nails. Place your pins or nails into the center of your wood and hammer them into the wood, making sure to keep the sharp points pointing towards you and not the wood. For the wall hooks, hammer the nail in and then take back out. Add a dab of the superglue in the hole and place the nail back into wood.
And you’re finished! Use the push pins to display your things on a bulletin board, and use the wall hooks to display art work in a natural way. And if you’re feeling especially adventurous, use super glue to attach small magnets on one side of the wooden nubs to create natural-looking magnets for the fridge.
Tip Junkie | Toilet Paper Wall Art
For this great looking wall art, all you need is some spray paint and primer, a canvas, a hot glue gun and a few empty rolls of toilet paper! You bend the toilet paper rolls and snip off pieces from each end to make little ringlets. Take the ringlets and spray them with primer and then whichever color of spray paint you wish. *Note: these will suck up a lot of paint. So make sure you have enough!*
After they’ve dried (drying times will vary depending on humidity and temperature) place them on your canvas in a design. You can follow this design, or branch out and do one on your own. You can also leave the canvas blank or cover it with wallpaper/wrapping paper or paint a design across it yourself. Once you’ve played around with it a bit and have the design locked-in, use a dab of hot glue to attach the ringlets to the canvas. Then hang it up anywhere in your home or dorm room.
The best part about using the hot glue is that, when you get sick of this design and want to do a different one or just utilize the canvas elsewhere, the hot glue chips right off with some elbow grease.
Sunset | Chandelier
Use some old glass chandelier lampshades to create a cute centerpiece. Choose matching lampshades, or mix it up with different ones. Wash them, dry, and add coats of paint if you’d like. Place them upside down on a strip of wood and place tea candles inside of them to create a unique centerpiece in your home.
Sunset | Paper Placemat
Use scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, or scraps of wallpaper to create your own personalized place mats. All you have to do is find your paper, cut to size, and run through a laminating machine. Messes just wipe off the surface and they can be used over and over and over again.
Country Living | Stenciled Animal Mugs
Making these adorable mugs is as easy as printing, cutting, painting and waiting! First, collect some coffee mugs or tea cups. Then print the provided templates and cut them out. Trace the animal shapes onto contact paper and cut out with a craft knife. You want to be sure to use a craft knife and not scissors, because you’re using the entire sheet of paper and not the animal shape that you cut out.
Throw away the animal shape that you have cut out (or keep for other purposes later on!). Now you are left with a sheet of contact paper that has an animal shape cut out of it. Remove the paper backing and place the contact paper onto the center of a clean coffee mug or tea cup. Then use a soft brush to fill in the outline with dishwasher-safe PermEnamel paint in any color that you choose (this can be found at any crafting stores in a variety of colors).
Let the cups set for a few minutes before carefully removing the contact paper from the cups. If there are any mess-ups, use a wet cotton swab to clean them up and straighten out your edges, then let the cups cure for 10 days before washing or using them.
Here are a few animal stencils to get you started, but feel free to find your own online and use them to create the perfect mug for you or your friends/family members! You can find character silhouettes from T.V. shows, band logos, or anything else you can think up.

Better Homes & Gardens | Custom Wainscoting
This wainscoting looks like it took skill and hours to put up, but you can easily set this up in any room of your home with a quick trip to the hardware store. These are ready-made PVC latticework panels that can be found in any hardware store. Purchase as many panels as you need, along with a chair rail to line the top of the panels. For an even better look, purchase some screen moldings to nail along the seams where your panels meet.
Country Living | Animal Tote Bag
Tote bags are amazing, especially for students in high school or college. Use one of these animal print tote bags to carry around your books, laptop, files, or lunch. For this cute DIY, just purchase a cheap canvas bag from any local crafts store. Print out one of the animal templates below and cut it out. Choose some fabric patterns that you like and trace the silhouette over the material, tracing it and cutting it out.
Trace the fabric silhouette pieces onto iron-on adhesives (which can be found at any crafts store for cheap). Following the instructions on the package, iron the adhesive onto the fabric pieces. Remove the adhesive backing and center the silhouette onto your bag. Iron the fabric into place. For added touches, you can sew on tiny buttons for eyes.
